What Are Ceramides?

Ceramides are lipids or fats that are found in our skin. They form a protective barrier that can hold moisture in and keep out any bacteria or pollutants. As you age, the quality of ceramides can reduce, leading to an increase in possible skin damage. This can include wrinkles, dry, rough skin and skin irritation. Ceramide levels can also change due to other factors including seasonal changes and the overuse of harsh exfoliants.

When ceramides are added into your skincare products, your skin quality may increase as the products can supplement the ceramides in your own skin by strengthening and hydrating the skin’s barrier. A great tip to make sure you lock in that moisture when using a product with ceramides is to apply it right after you get out of the shower whilst your skin is still damp.

Ceramides can be found in a variety of cosmetic products including shampoos, soaps and sunscreens. Specific skincare ranges incorporating ceramides can be a skin-saver in the colder months, or year-round for those of us with dry skin. Try the new QV Intensive with Ceramides range, designed for those with chronically dry, itchy or flaky skin. QV Intensive with Ceramides Hydrating Body Wash and Light Moisturising Cream may help prevent dryness and help the skin to maintain optimal hydration.
