Blue light is a short wavelength light also known as HEV (High-Energy Visible) light, that we’re commonly exposed to from the sun as well as from our screens and indoor lighting. There have been numerous studies addressing the effect of blue light on sleep, and research has now expanded into how blue light can affect your skin.
 

It is suggested that blue light may contribute towards the production of free radicals in the skin, increasing the rate of ageing. [1] A study by Unilever Skincare Research stated that blue light is shown to cause oxidative stress and create free radicals which can disrupt the collagen structures within the skin.[2]
 

There are ways in which we can try and reduce our blue light exposure in our everyday lives. Downloading a blue light filter app can help to reduce the glare from your phone at night. While it may be difficult to even consider, reducing your screen time is another way to limit your exposure. Choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more can also help to protect your skin against any damage. Not all sunscreens include blue light in their standard broad-spectrum UVA/UVB coverage. Zinc and titanium dioxide-based sunscreens can reflect some portions of HEV light, but not all. Your best bet is to look for products specifically designed to block blue light.
 

There has been an influx of skincare products that aim to protect the skin from blue light. The Jojoba Company’s new ultimate day cream uses a fermented marine active that moisturises and increases luminosity while protecting skin from blue light digital ageing. The marine active ingredient Arctalis is used in their formula, helping to reinforce the structural integrity of the skin whilst protecting it from blue light. Enriched with natural actives, orchid and magnolia extracts this cream may help towards visibly reducing skin sagging, fine lines and increasing elasticity.
