Diabetes & Glucometers FAQS

What items should diabetics always carry with them?
Diabetes should always carry insulin, a needle, test strips and a blood glucose meter whenever they leave the house. They should also carry a small supply of fast acting glucose with them in case they have low blood sugar.

What products do I need to manage my diabetes?
You need a range of products to manage your diabetes, but it also depends on your needs. You may need a glucometer, which will also need glucose strips, a lancing device and lancets, an insulin pump and more. Your healthcare provider will be able to guide you through what you need.

What do diabetics get for free in Australia?
The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) helps people with diabetes to understand and manage their life with diabetes. It also provides people with subsidised access to syringes and needles, blood glucose test strips, urine test strips, insulin pump consumables and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) products.

What’s a glucometer?
A glucometer or a glucose meter is used to measure the amount of glucose in your blood. It’s usually a small portable machine that displays your blood glucose levels whenever you’ve decided to check them. It’s used by people with diabetes to help manage their condition.
