You're not alone if you struggle with atopic eczema. The skin condition affects up to 30% of children and up to 10% of adults in Australia [1].
Studies have shown that up to 46% of people living with eczema feel that it has an impact on their self-esteem and confidence [2].
Living with eczema can be challenging, but understanding how to care for your skin can help to make a real difference.
To ease some of these challenges, here are three simple ways to manage and soothe eczema symptoms:
Avoid known triggers.
Some common triggers that can cause eczema to flare up are infections and stress, but there are other triggers that affect each individual differently. For this reason, it’s good to know what makes your skin worse.
Other triggers can include products with perfume or fragrances, overheating, certain clothing materials, chlorinated swimming pools, tomato sauce or citrus fruits and pollen [3].
Take short, warm baths or showers once daily.
Short, warm baths or showers, particularly in the evenings, can help soothe eczema symptoms. Using a non-soap based wash, such as Ego QV Dermcare Eczema Daily Wash, is also important to avoid further irritation [4].
Ego’s QV Dermcare Eczema Daily Wash is a hydrating soap-free wash made with a pH-balanced formula to gently cleanse and help soothe eczema skin while retaining moisture.
Gently removing any eczema crusts in the bath or shower will also help any ointment, such as the Ego QV Dermcare Sting-Free Ointment, work more effectively. As well as helping soothe cracked skin for up to 24 hours, a unique benefit of Ego’s ointment is that it’s sting-free. This is a result of the formula not containing water, which is what usually produces the stinging sensation on broken skin.
Regularly moisturise.
Having eczema means that your skin loses moisture easily which can lead to dry skin, flare-ups and infections. Moisturising every day protects the skin barrier, helping to prevent this [5].
Moisturising creams like Ego’s QV Dermcare Eczema Daily Cream, which is scientifically formulated and clinically tested, specifically for mild to moderate eczema, can help create a protective barrier to retain moisture in the skin and improve the skin barrier function.
For effective eczema management, it’s recommended to use Ego’s QV products in conjunction. Nine out of ten people agreed the use of QV Dermcare Eczema Daily Wash and Cream together improved the symptoms of their mild to moderate eczema.
