What is a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)?

A rapid antigen test, also known as a RAT COVID-19 test, is a screening tool used to detect specific proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

These tests typically provide results within 10-30 minutes, making them a convenient option for quick COVID-19 detection.

How do Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) work?

Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) work by detecting the presence of proteins of the coronavirus^. They can be used anywhere without supervision from a healthcare professional, and return a result between 10 to 20 minutes.

How accurate are Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT)?

Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) are generally 80% or more accurate in detecting COVID-19. they're more accurate when you are experiencing symptoms, so it’s better to take the test in the first seven days of having symptoms^.

While you’re waiting for your results, you can put on a face mask if you’re going out or are near other people as a precautionary measure.

How do I perform a rapid antigen test?

To perform a rapid antigen test, carefully follow the instructions provided in your COVID test kit. These step-by-step instructions include a strong recommendation that you don’t eat, drink, smoke, brush your teeth, or chew your gum for 10 to 30 minutes before doing the RAT test

Generally, the process involves collecting a nasal sample using a swab, mixing it with a solution, and applying it to a test cassette.

Always wash your hands before and after testing, and dispose of used materials properly.

What is the difference between a RAT test and a PCR test?

RATs (rapid antigen tests) provide quick results and are ideal for at-home use when you need an answer fast.

PCR tests are lab-based and more sensitive. PCR tests are able to detect even small amounts of the virus, making them a preferred option when accuracy is critical or symptoms are mild.

RATs may be less accurate, but are more accessible and are convenient when you want to test for COVID-19 in the comfort of your own home.

How many days until I test positive for COVID-19?

Getting a COVID test can help identify infection and reduce the spread of the virus to others. You are likely to test positive for COVID-19 between two to six days after exposure, although it may take up to 14 days (2)

If symptoms such as fever, cough, or fatigue develop, it’s a good idea to test, as symptoms may be associated with an active infection.

Taking a Rapid Antigen Test around 5 to 7 days after potential exposure or if symptoms appear is recommended for optimal results (2).
