All parents know the value of a good thermometer! There are various types of thermometers on the market that are appropriate for different purposes.

Mercury Thermometers
Years ago, a glass mercury thermometer was found in most medicine cabinets. Today, mercury thermometers have been replaced by digital thermometers, because they are quicker and easier to use. There was also a risk of mercury poisoning if the thermometer broke.
Digital Thermometers
Digital thermometers use electronic heat sensors to record body temperature in approximately 60 seconds. Digital thermometers such as the Omron MC343F can be used orally, under the arm or rectally.

Ear Thermometers
Digital ear thermometers (tympanic thermometers) like the Omron TH839S Ear Thermometer use an infrared ray to measure the temperature inside the ear canal. These thermometers are quicker and easier to use than regular digital thermometers, particularly in children. It is important, however, that the infrared ray reaches the inside of the ear canal and not the wall of the ear to achieve an accurate reading.

Touchless Forehead Thermometers
Touchless forehead thermometers such as an Omron MC720 Forehead Thermometer, provide a quick accurate measurement without the need to disturb a sleeping child or baby. No contact also means that there is no risk of cross contamination. It can safely be used on all ages from newborns with tiny ear canals to adults.
