What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support for Australians with a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.
The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary support for individuals, their families and carers, to access services and support that relates to a person’s disability and helps to achieve their goals.
As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.
How is the NDIS accessed?
To qualify and become a participant of NDIS, people must first meet the access requirements.
These requirements are:
1. Availability of NDIS in your area
2. Your age
3. Your residency status
4. Your disability and in some cases your early intervention requirements
There are a number of people in your local community who can help you access the NDIS. These include:
• Local area co-ordinator partners (for people aged between 7 and 64 years of age)
• Early childhood partners (for parents of children under 7 years of age)
For information about access requirements, visit the official NDIS website.
If you are eligible for NDIS funding and you become an NDIS participant, you will receive a plan based on your individual needs. You will work with your chosen service providers to achieve your specific goals which may include:
• Improving speech and communication skills through therapy
• Learning new skills
• Becoming more independent
• Making friends and connections
• Getting help with everyday living activities or equipment to help you at home or in your community
