What SPF rating should I choose for effective sun protection?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates the level of protection a product provides against UVB radiation. In Australia, sunscreen products are available in SPF30 and SPF50+. SPF30 filters approximately 97% of UVB radiation, while SPF50+ filters about 98%. For most daily activities, SPF30 provides adequate protection, but for extended outdoor exposure, SPF50+ is recommended. Remember that regardless of SPF rating, suncare products should be applied generously 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours, or more frequently when swimming or sweating. Our suncare range includes options for various needs, including specialised formulations for water activities and sports.

How are facial sunscreens different from body sunscreens?

Facial sunscreen formulations are typically designed with consideration for the delicate skin of the face. These products often contain additional ingredients that may benefit facial skin, such as moisturisers or antioxidants, and are generally formulated to be lighter and less greasy than body sunscreens. Many facial sunscreens are also created to work well under makeup and may be suitable for specific skin concerns like oiliness, dryness, or sensitivity. Our collection includes facial suncare options from brands like La Roch-Posay, CeraVe and Cetaphil, which offer targeted protection for daily facial use.

What suncare options are available for children and those with sensitive skin?

Children's sunscreen and sunscreens for sensitive skin typically feature gentler formulations with minimal irritants and fragrances. These sunscreens are designed to provide effective UV protection while minimising the risk of skin reactions. Brands like Cancer Council and DermaVeen offer products specifically formulated for sensitive and children's skin. When selecting suncare for children or those with sensitive skin, look for products labelled as dermatologically tested, fragrance-free, or specifically designed for sensitive skin types.

What is the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens?

Sunscreens typically use either chemical or physical (mineral) UV filters, or a combination of both. Chemical filters work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat, while physical filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create a barrier that reflects and scatters UV radiation away from the skin. Chemical sunscreens typically blend more easily and leave less visible residue, while physical sunscreens may be preferable for sensitive skin as they're less likely to cause irritation. Our suncare range includes both types, allowing you to choose based on your personal preferences and skin needs.
